Inspiring Student Leaders & Building School Communities!

Not long after Meagan Bebenek was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 4, her family noticed that she began doing something remarkable; she started wrapping up her favourite toys to give to school friends while undergoing her treatments. In a gesture of caring support, Meagan’s school gathered together in a symbolic human hug around the building and presented Meagan with hundreds of origami cranes as a message of hope and peace.  This moment would become the catalyst for the Meagan’s Walk School Program. Since Meagan’s death in 2001, hundreds of schools across Ontario have continued to spread this compassionate message of “Kids Helping Kids”. Above Meagan and her sister accept handmade origami cranes symbolizing hope from students at their school.

Throughout the school year Meagan's Walk: Creating a Circle of Hope encourages all young people to share the spirit of hope within their own school communities.  Through various activities children learn empathy and empowerment. They learn to have compassion for one another and develop leadership skills that they then take with them as they follow their own life’s path.

Bring the Spirit of Meagan's Walk into your School Today!

“Being a student ambassador for Meagan’s Walk gave me the opportunity to develop my leadership skills in a supportive and fun environment, while also allowing me to gain a greater appreciation for the fact that communities and individuals can have a positive impact on the world.”  -Sara Brade

Many Elementary, Secondary and Post-Secondary Schools can help share the message of compassion and hope within their own school community by doing some of the following:

  • Organize a school hug around the building, school yard, or tree
  • Plant a tree as a symbol of the students’ commitment to supporting each other
  • Do a ‘walk’ around the school neighbourhood and invite parents and grandparents to participate
  • Organize a skate-a-thon, dance-a-thon, skipping event
  • Choose a ‘special’ day for your event – Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s, Christmas
Kick Start Your Fundraising!

  • Collecting pledges for your school's planned event
  • Hosting a bake sale, penny drive, loonie or twoonie day
  • Organizing a dress down or dress up day - students donate a specific amount to participate
  • Having a "Crazy Hat" day and have students pay for the privilege of wearing their hat to school that day
  • Asking for donations to Meagan's Walk in lieu of birthday gifts
